A few words of advice
Simply a classic; the plunger/french press is a sure-fire way to brew some conversation when entertaining guests or enjoying a cup with friends. For this method, coffee needs to be ground very course and dosed dependant on how many cups you are brewing for; a good ratio is 15g of coffee for every 250ml of water used. TIP: Consider running your brewed coffee through a filter to avoid sediment in your cup.
What you need
- Plunger/French Press
- Kettle
- Grinder
- Spoon
- Accurate Kitchen Scale
How to make it:
1. PREPARE EQUIPMENT
Start by bringing your desired amount of water to a boil in the kettle. While this is taking place, rinse your plunger with hot water to ensure there is no residual coffee left in it.
2. GRIND YOUR BEANS
As mentioned above, coffee needs to be ground coarsely for use in a plunger; it should feel similar to the consistency of sand between your fingers. Place a cup on your scale and tare it to zero, weigh out your desired amount of coffee grounds and place the grounds into your clean, empty plunger.
3. ADD WATER
Pour boiling water directly onto the coffee in a circular motion, ensuring all grounds get saturated, then replace to lid onto the plunger.
4. LET IT BREW
Let the coffee brew in the plunger for 3 minutes, then remove the lid and stir vigorously. Replace the lid and let coffee brew for an additional 1 minute.
5. PLUNGE
At the 4 minute mark, begin to slowly plunge your coffee; if you find you are getting strong resistance, you may have ground your coffee too finely or dosed too much grind for your amount of water. Serve and enjoy!
